We are consistently updating our educational resources to support and enhance the school readiness program and maximise children’s learning in a stimulating way. We also understand the importance of incorporating the child’s interest into our school readiness program to make these experiences fun and personalised for the children’s development – because no two little learners are the same. We focus on topics like literacy, numeracy, social and emotional skills, physical (both fine and gross motor) and self-help skills.
As part of our commitment to prepare children for their schooling years, we have developed a school readiness calendar that highlights what your child will be undertaking each day they attend the centre.
Booklets & Name writing
The letter of the week is based on our phonics scheme, through which the children extend their knowledge on letter recognition, phonics and sight words. Educators incorporate name writing into this session to assist children to write their names on their booklets. This allows for children to receive more one on one interaction to effectively support children in meeting their individual needs. Name writing is now also incorporated throughout our lesson plan and routine through activities such as the preschool sign in and out, daily roll calls during group time and name games.
Reading
We focus on learning three sight words a week such as ‘that’, ‘how’, ‘there’, ‘who’. Sight words are words that children can recognise instantly and are the foundations to reading and writing. The three focus sight words for the week are based on our Sight Words plan. We also incorporate the reading eggs program as well as other reading activities such as reading books from our centre library etc to provide children with extra support in this area.
Phonics & Letter Recognition
Phonics helps children understand the concept that words are made up of letters, and letters represent sounds. We will be incorporating a range of different phonics and letter recognition activities to support children in building their letter recognition skills and their phonics knowledge.
Reading Eggs program
We implement reading eggs into our daily routine to allow children to participate in a combined literacy lesson where we focus on a range of different skills. This inclusion in our routine is to help children become familiar and confident with reading eggs so that they can maximise their skills at home by using their own personal login.
Homework books
The aim of the homework books is to help children understand the concept of homework whilst also encouraging their learning at home with the help of a parent.
In addition to the above, we also focus on promoting self-help skills and independence as well as social skills and confidence to ensure children have developed these crucial skills necessary for school. Each fortnight, we focus on supporting children with achieving two milestones from the developmental milestones, so that the children can have a smoother transition to school.
